Eat. Shop. Love. — Local
Recently Cleveland was named one of the top rising cities in the world by Gogobot, a travel website based on the reviews of 3.7 million travelers. When I read this last week, I started thinking of some of the places that make this city so great and which of those places I would recommend to tourists coming into the city. The very first thing that came to mind was Cleveland’s historic (and beloved) West Side Market. If you live in Cleveland chances are you you’ve probably ventured to the historical West Side Market at some point in your life. And if you haven’t, well… what are you waiting for? It’s awesome!
Dating back to 1840, the West Side Market is Cleveland’s oldest publicly owned market. The original WSM was placed across the street from its location today and started off as an outside marketplace. But, in 1912, architects Benjamin Hubbel and W. Dominick Benes designed the yellow brick interior market building which is today’s interior market and home to over 100 vendors selling fine meats, poultry, cheeses, bakery, handmade pastas, gourmet spices and more. With its 44-foot tall, sparkling bronze tiled ceiling, the interior market is truly one of Cleveland’s most amazing buildings.
The West Side Market has even gained national recognition when it was featured on cable television stations such as the Travel Channel and the Food Network.
If you do go to the WSM, be sure to try out these local vendors:
